Nothing Beats the Original
(Printed Invitations are still the Best)

When I was young, I loved special occasions. Parties, summer camps, weddings, all of those make my tummy tingle from excitement. I remember when my aunt got married; we received a fancy letter from her. Even the smell and writing of the letter was nice. Ever since, weddings have been fun for me. But birthday parties are the bomb. A week before my birthday, I would excitedly cross-out the dates on my calendar, as they approach the day of my birth. I would help my mother with the preparations for the party. I would pick the theme (mostly related to space since I wanted to be an astronaut, the colors of the table sheets, the decorations for the cake, and the people who are invited (obviously). But my favorite part was designing the invitation. I would write the message of the letter and think of ideas on how to creatively show it. One time, I had a “pop-up” letter where an alien would come-out of the invitation the moment it was opened. My friends had a fun time with it, with their parents almost jumping because of the surprise. Oh, I miss those days.

Now, people just send their invitations electronically. If there is a party, people just either send an e-mail or a text message to the ones who are invited. Even though sending messages electronically is an efficient way to contact people, I feel that printed invitations are still better. Why? Because writing messages through letters is more personal. Sending an email or a text message is as simple as buying a ring in 77 Diamonds. Writing letters, however, takes time. The effort and the creativity used to produce the printed invite makes it more meaningful. You can connect more with the sender in a letter compared to a bland e-mail or text message.

Formal events still use printed invites, but I hope that more people use them in other occasions as well. Invitations have more meaning back in the day and it would be nice to see letters make a come-back today. Also, formal events like weddings would lose a sense of importance if the invites were done electronically. The next generation would surely miss a lot if they don’t experience being invited through a letter with a scary alien popping-out.
